Debbie Spann, fire chief of Old Salem Rescue and Fire, recently spoke to the Rotary Club of Greene and Putnam Counties.

She started with providing an overview on the Old Salem Fire Department. She has 24 persons in her department and has a GEMA recognized Rescue Team and a Dive Team.

Old Salem Fire Department has two locations, one is located in Reynolds Plantation and the other is on Carey Station Road. The Old Salem location has a breathing air compressor and cascade system at their location. They also have a fire boat, which is located near Highway 44 bridge crossing of Lake Oconee. Old Salem has two engines, two tankers (2,000 gallons each), one rescue service truck, two pumper-tankers (1,650 gallons each), one source pumper and a chief’s truck. They also have a fire boat capable of delivering 2,800 GPM, which is great news for the many residents in our area who have homes on the lake.

Spann advised the Old Salem location had an October ‘surprise.’ She advised: “Emergency Medical Services arrived at Old Salem, in October, with ‘bus in hand’ and would be providing personnel twenty-four hours per day.”

In addition Spann advised, “We receive approximately 300 calls per year of which almost seventy-five percent of the calls are medical in nature. Some start out as simply medical issues, such as a bee sting, and then progress to Anaphylactic Shock. Her teams, to include EMS, respond to insure the person involved is provided appropriate medical assistance, until EMS personnel can further treat or transport to a hospital.”

Spann concluded her remarks by stating; “the Old Salem Fire Station was build for the future, anticipating growth in the area and insuring adequate room to increase and accommodate staffing to properly serve the community. Additionally she stated volunteers, interested in being a First Responder, are always needed. Her team will provide training, to allow volunteers to be certified as first responders.” Anyone interested in being a First Responder should call 706-453-4693.
