A group of Lake Oconee Elks attended an art therapy session Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Georgia War Veterans Home. This was a watercolor painting session with the vets as they learned different techniques about water colors.
In November, the Lodge donated art supplies to the group and attended a craft session helping the veterans put together Christmas ornaments. On this visit, the Elks took a drying rack and stayed for the painting session. The art supplies that were donated were made possible by the Freedom Grant the Lodge received from the Elks National Foundation.
The veterans are quite talented and it was a pleasure working with them. A lot of the veterans used some of the art books that were previously donated to help choose a picture to copy and then paint. Some of them chose to make charcoal drawings. Bill Lewis and Merle Sebald spent time showing the art teacher’s assistant how to use the new mat cutter that the lodge had donated with the other art supplies. The veterans have art shows coming up in February.
