GREENSBORO, Ga. — The third Saturday of each month at the Greene County Second Harvest food distribution, the Rotary Club sponsored Books 4 Kids program provides books to any child in those families who is age 10 and younger. The book is chosen by the child if he or she is present or by the parent or care-giver if the child is not. More than 1,200 books have been distributed since November 2017, the project’s inception.

In December, thanks to a generous donor, volunteers were able to distribute stuffed animals, as well, as books. Children, their parent, or caregiver selected a book and a stuffed animal, which were wrapped for Christmas. Rotarians and Interact Club students assisted in the selections, the wrapping, and the personalization of the gift packaging. More than 50 gifts were distributed that day.

Usually, volunteers see many smiles and receive lots of “thank yous” on these Saturdays. Each month, they hear stories about how small children “read” the books to younger siblings and how children finish each page as the parent begins to read it; however, this was one magical third Saturday in December when all experienced genuine gratitude — and SERVICE — through a few tears.
